Having recovered from my utter disappointment from watching Magical Musicals, I was somehow a bit hesitant to dump another RM120 bucks to watch Dreamgirls; the psychological trauma I sustained from watching a lousy musical was a bit too hard to take. So, after a month of careful repetitive contemplation, I finally succumbed to Jessica's invitation to watch Dreamgirls, and thanks to the Phamacist's superb idea of using a GroupOn voucher, we got ourselves a First-Class seat with only half the usual price!
We beat the ridiculous traffic jam along Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Kuantan, and managed to arrive Istana Budaya just 5 minutes before the show starts, and already there was a small crowd. Hmm... I din't know the manatee shows would attract that much people too. Moreover, no drinks are allowed in the theatre, and in one gulp I have to flushed down 750mls of mineral water that Jessica bought for me for RM2! Lucky my bladder did not fail me throughout the show!
So, with the RM248 seats (of which we bought for just RM124) we were like 10-12 meters away from the stage and the view was excellent, for my meager expectations; its near enough for us to get a close look at the casts' faces, and its far enough that we can see the entire stage without turning out heads.
Anyway, the casts, which I think all of them are local artistes, were fantastic and boy could they sing! Effie has a great voice and so does Lorelle, but I think Deena's was a bit shaky. Jimmy's role was played superbly well and he brightened up the early parts of the show where the best scenes have yet to come. Their costumes were mesmerizingly bedazzling and so were the backdrops. I am somehow very fond of the giant DREAMGIRLS sign in blue, and I think that stunned me in awe for a few minutes. Not to forget the pyrotechnics, which are just simply marvelous.
I'm glad I did not miss this. I'm looking forward to seeing more musicals now. :)
